Parent Education for Supporting Your Neurodivergent Child

Within an interactive, small-group format, parents will receive the most current information about neurodiversity to deepen their knowledge about their child’s autism and/or ADHD and related differences.  Parents will gain an understanding of their child’s experiences and needs as they are reflected through behaviour and emotions.  They will learn affirmative parenting responses and ways to alter their child’s environment to assist in building their child’s relationships, emotional regulation and self-esteem.  Resources will be provided to continue the learning journey beyond the group sessions.

Strict limit of 7 participants per group. Family discount of 20% for second parent attending from the same family.

About Presenter

Kelly Johnson

DPsych (Clin), MAPS, FCCLP

Ages: 0 – 25 years old, Adults, Parents

Kelly is a registered Clinical Psychologist and Supervisor.  She has over 20 years of experience supporting the mental health needs of children, adolescents, adults and families across a variety of fields including paediatric research, public mental health, out-of-home care and group training.

Using evidenced-based therapeutic principles and a neuroaffirmative approach, Kelly works in collaboration with families, schools and allied-health professionals to improve children’s emotional wellbeing and family functioning. She provides assessment and therapy to children, adolescents and adults facing a range of concerns including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, relational difficulties, emotional dysregulation, adjustment issues (e.g., parental separation) and recovery from trauma.

Kelly has a special interest in supporting parents with their own emotional health and wellbeing, including within the context of parenting neurodivergent children and assisting them to thrive. She has experience in supporting members of the LGBTQIA+ community including transgender young people and Rainbow Families. As a mother herself, Kelly understands that every child has their own unique temperament, strengths and challenges and therefore needs strategies and parenting approaches personalized for the needs of the family.

Beyond work, Kelly enjoys learning about the universe and our place in it, having games nights with her children and (slowly) expanding her piano and D&D skills!
